Shakespeare in Jazz is an engaging, participatory celebration of Shakespeare's work, offering an exciting new way to experience his genius. Great for those discovering his plays for the first time and Shakespeare aficionados alike!

Throughout the concert, audience members will join powerhouse jazz vocalist Frederick Johnson and pianist Daniel Kelly’s jazz group as they sing along to catchy, original songs based on Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Hamlet and many more!

Composer/pianist Daniel Kelly transforms the stories of everyday people into dramatic and compelling music that has delighted audiences around the country.

This unique performance has been specially created right here in Westchester for family audiences. Audiences will hear the dreams, hopes, and struggles of local students in recorded interviews that are seamlessly blended with original compositions performed by Kelly’s band of world-class musicians.

“The goal of this concert is that by hearing someone’s life story and point of view, we may all be more understanding with one another. These students’ stories have humor and drama and I hope to honor them by composing music that uplifts the audience and fosters a sense of compassion.”

In a specially created event, renowned pianist Daniel Kelly will weave the stories of local students – based on interviews about their lives during the school day – into a one-of-a-kind concert, accompanied by his ensemble of NYC’s finest jazz musicians.

Connection Works, a leader in artist-run organizations, presents the next concert in the 12th season of its premiere concert series Wide Open Works.

The seven-piece chamber jazz ensemble:

Connection Works’ ensemble-in-residence Wide Open is a collective of established composer/improvisers using their unique chamber instrumentation to explore new musical terrain, keeping all possibilities wide open. The unique instrumentation of flute, violin, saxophone, trombone, piano, bass and drums allows composers to develop work that draws equally from jazz, classical, world and folk music traditions.

The members of Wide Open have performed and recorded with a stunning range of artists, including Ray Charles, Wynton Marsalis, Sting, D’Angelo, Bruce Springsteen, Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Woody Allen, Joe Lovano, Lauryn Hill, John Zorn and many more.
